ART BLAKEY, NYC, 1965 - Art Blakey was a tremendous performer and great developer of talent. Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Freddie Hubbard were all in Art's Jazz Messengers at one time or another. Junior Cook was the horn player that night and the music was powerful, a great night. I think of rock and roll, with it's simple forms, as music for the adolescent in me. Jazz is for grownups, intense and complex. This was taken at a dirty, smoky bar in Harlem, where your shoes stuck to the floor.
